The Infamous Photo Shoot

I have been thinking for a few days about how I want to start this whole blog thing out. So I figured I would just start from the beginning. I was born in a small town in……haha just kidding, that would be too much information and very boring.

So several years ago in Portland, Oregon (where I was living at the time), I did this photo shoot. It was my very first job with my new agent (I am an actress), so I was pretty excited, even though it was just modeling, and not acting. It actually paid fairly well for what we were doing…I mean how hard is modeling? Especially that kind where it was pretty candid. Of course if I had known what a huge deal these photos would become I may have felt different about the amount I was getting paid. It was a stock photo shoot and royalty-free, which I really didn’t understand at the time…I also didn’t think much of it because I thought no one would really even use my photos…yes even The Everywhere Girl has her insecurities.

So I talked to the wardrobe/makeup woman for the shoot on the phone, and she said to bring lots and lots of clothes. Well she did NOT know what she was getting herself into. I have always been a clothes horse (what does that mean anyway?), and expressed myself through my outfits, so I pretty much brought EVERYTHING in my closet.

I loaded up my ruby-colored 1972 VW Squareback (the station wagon version of the Beetle) and headed off to Reed College. Yes, they were right…the infamous photos were taken in and around Reed College in Southeast Portland. Reed College is absolutely beautiful as you can see in some of the photos. It is a Liberal Arts School known for having very quirky and eccentric students. In fact, if you ever say something like “Oh, he/she went to Reed” to anyone in Portland, they usually respond with a knowing “OOOHHHH”, like they finally understand why this person is the way that he or she is.

So I pulled into the parking lot of Reed and saw the woman who I had talked to on the phone, and the photographer, Doug Menuez. They were from Seattle and had flown down there for the shoot. Doug was very easy to work with and made the whole thing really fun and natural. The makeup and wardrobe woman was soooooo cool. She had a funky outfit on and was wearing this awesome sort of blue-ish purple hat. She had me open the back of my car to see what I had brought and when I did, she squealed with delight in the fact that I had brought soooo much stuff. She started tearing through everything and picking out outfits for me to wear. So everything I wore in that shoot was mine….except for the hat…that was the one she was wearing. I of course did NOT think it looked as good on me as it did on her, especially with my outfit…but she was the stylist. Everyone else at the shoot was wearing whatever she had given them, so I was lucky because I felt really comfortable in my own clothes, you know? I mean the outfits she put together weren’t exactly what I would have done, but it was nice to have her be so excited about all my stuff, especially since I totally dug her style. Oh and keep in mind that this shoot was done a while ago, so laugh all you want at the outfits, but it was cool back then, I swear!!!

Once we got all of our outfits together we just started hanging out outside the school. They basically took candid shots of us sitting on the grass, on a picnic bench, walking, etc…..you know “collegiate” types of things….whatever that means. In fact, the irony of this whole thing is that I never even went to college and somehow I ended up being the poster child for college…who knew? But I HAVE actually gone to many schools and learned a lot of different things, just not a University per se…but that is for a whole other blog at some other time. My mom always makes fun of me because I brought a hacky sack to the shoot….I just thought it would be very “collegiate”…most of my friends were in college and that’s what they did…you know, instead of actually going to class.

For the outside shots they had me use my backpack which I had just brought to hold some of my personal belongings in. It was this HUGE yellow-green hemp bag with a large sun/moon patch on it…I was amazed that they wanted to use it. They had me running in a lot of the shots…not like “I’m late to class” running, but “I am running through a field of daisies” running. It was very awkward in my Doc Martens, oversized leather jacket (I am telling you, that was the style), and ginormous backpack.

Once we were all done outside, we went inside the school. We found a great lecture classroom and shot in there. They had me change outfits but I still had to keep that damn hat on! This part of the shoot was really fun though because we got to goof around and pass notes and be obnoxious. Some of my favorite shots are when we are debating with the teacher….I have no recollection of what we were debating about, but I remember it being hilarious. I think it was just some ridiculous topic that we made up, who knows. The guy who played the teacher was this guy who I ended up being in a play with later on…we laughed about that shoot and wondered what in the heck it would ever be used for…if we only knew! Oh and you know that shot that always gets used, where I am yawning? I was really yawning there and I guess they just caught it on film…I think the shoot was at 7:00 am or something, and I am NOT a morning person.

Well I feel as though I have blabbed for hours….if you are even still reading this I am impressed and honored. I do have a surprise for my next blog though. You see, there was a whole other part of this shoot that no one seems to know about. A lot of the pictures of me from this other part have been used as well…but no one has really made the connection that it is me. So I will talk about that and put some links up to Getty Images so you can see these “new” shots! You may have already, but didn’t know it was The Everywhere Girl at the time.

Oh and in case you want to see the pictures from the Reed College photo shoot, here they are:

Good luck with your Blog ‘Everwhere Girl’. I’ve been reading about your ‘ad-ventures’ for quite a while now, so it’s great to finally hear from in person. Shame about those royalties eh? :-)

How can we the readers be sure you are in fact the INQ/Everywhere girl and not a ghost writer?.

Ooh wow – some background behind the most ubiquitous smile online.

More shoots! ;)

Oh hey – how red is your hair anyway? With the hat on you can’t see roots! :p

Welcome to the Blogosphere, Everywhere Girl!!

#10 Nikolas on 07.06.06 at 3:30 am

At last, the girl that we have been monitoring through the Inq starts a blog !
Welcome online !
Wordpress was a nice choice by the way !
Please post pictures of you and an update on your current works.
Do you have any parts in films/plays ?

#11 André on 07.06.06 at 3:49 am

Hello from Paris France, Everywhere Girl, we’ve been following through The Inq your ad-ventures for quite a while as well, and now that it’s starting to be edited in different languages, well, I guess there’s even more followers to expect.

Good idea to seize the opportunity and start a blog to increase the spotlight this funny situation can give you, specially if you’re an actress, who knows how high can it goes.

Best wishes,

#12 richard on 07.06.06 at 5:38 am

Welcome to the world of blogging.

Yeah, The Inq has been your biggest fan / stalker. I think everyone who knows about you knows you from there.

That is an interesting story. I rather imagined it was much more spontaneous, basically a film crew shows up on campus, gets students to sign release forms and then proceeds to take pictures. I didn’t realize that it was so organized.

Probably what makes you stand out so much is the fact that you are in your own clothes and comfortable. Sure, the environment is not of your choosing, but you seem to blend right in (a good actor always blends into their role. Right?)

#13 Willard on 07.06.06 at 5:40 am

Hey Everywhere Girl, Been to Reed myself (just visiting) and being a westcoaster as well, your right it is a great place and very preaty.
Good luck on the blog and will be reading often.

How long has it been since the infamous photo shoot? And what have you been doing with yourself since?

Hi EG,

Nice to have a few more details on the (nice looking) young lady who seems to pop up on many web pages I read.

Don’t give too much away all at once on the blog though – that wouldnt be half as much fun :)

Good luck in your acting career, hopefully we’ll see “The Everywhere Girl” in the credits of a Hollywood movie one day :)

#18 James on 07.06.06 at 7:04 am

Greetings from Canada!

You’re so damn cute in that hat! Maybe you should market a line of hats?

So what’s next for the Everywhere Girl? Movies? You could be the next Bond girl – geeks everywhere would have a field day!

Imagine the possibilities.

Best luck,

J.

#19 chris on 07.06.06 at 7:57 am

No more boneheaded moves like the royalties fiasco – you need to parly this thing into stardom! Real red carpet stuff. Actress, model, whatever, you are Everywhere Girl now (sounds like batman or something) and you can call the shots. Don’t underestimate your fan base. What you are doing right now, with this blog, is true cross marketing, and you should appreciate the power of that. If my firm can ever be of assistance do let me know (see address).

#20 Justin on 07.06.06 at 10:05 am

Congrats on the exposure, Everywhere Girl! Hopefully you can use it to get more opportunities at acting. Your photos are cute and your smile is a sweet one. Good luck =)

Three cheers for Everywhere Girl!

You should see if you can’t get yourself some better advertising on this here blog. Something like federated media, adbrite, or blog ads who can get you a campaign with broader appeal.

Being a graduate from Reed, we worked out that you weren’t actually a student, but I’m glad that you were at least a local. Maybe a current student will contact you now that you have a blog. They can make you queen of Renn Fayre or something and cart you around in a little float.

#27 Fred on 07.06.06 at 12:26 pm

I have followed the Everywhere Girl story on INQ. Always entertaining. What a great smile and so darn cute in that hat. No wonder your image is selling everything from books to fire extinguishers to computers. Best of luck to you.

#28 El Servas on 07.06.06 at 12:28 pm

At last… We can have contact with the famous Everywhere Girl!
Good luck with your new blog.
Maybe we can think about starting a fan club for the EG? :)

#29 Victor Cespón on 07.06.06 at 1:34 pm

Hi, I just saw an article in the inquirer notifying everybody that you had started a blog.
After two years of seeing your pictures in so many websites, it’s nice to hear from you directly.
Looking for web sites which used the now infamous pictures had became a sort of sport for theinquirer readers, always surprising us with new appereances on strange places.
We expect to hear more fom you.

#30 spotsdad on 07.06.06 at 2:01 pm

Finally, the Everywhere Girl is revealed! You’re like the Holy Grail – the world has been looking for you, but never sure if we’d ever find you.

It actually seems quite unreal to hear from you. I’m pleased that you sound as lively and beautiful as your pictures show. I speak for all your fans out there when I say that we eagerly look forward to more blog entries and pictures from you.

Thank you for coming forward and letting us get to know you!

P.S. – Being as attractive and well-known in the IT world as you are, there *will* be crazy nutjobs out there that will shock and unease you. Don’t get discouraged! There are many of us who want to respect your privacy and we enjoy what you are doing.

Welcome!

#31 Ryan on 07.06.06 at 3:08 pm

I’ve always found this concept quite intriguing and unique since I first read about it on Inq. Now it’s one step further and straight from the source! Very cool.

As the people continue to wonder just where will the Everywhere Girl show up next? :)

Take care.

#32 Sam on 07.06.06 at 3:56 pm

All I can say is thank God we now know your whereabouts, theinquirer.net may actually start reporting some news since they located you. :)

PS, Next time ask for royalties, as your a popular face seen everywhere.

Good luck with your modeling career and whatever else you pursue.

Sam

#33 Richard on 07.06.06 at 5:28 pm

You wanted to be an actress and become famous for being a model. Has this helped your acting career any?

Nice to read the story behind the smile and we look forward to more of course. Now a video on your site would be very cool, as long as you still have the hat! :-}

As with most people here, I’ve linked over from the INQ and have been following you from the keyboard of Megeek since the Dell days also.

I wish you well and pray for your success.

-Richard

#34 stancilmor on 07.06.06 at 5:57 pm

Nice to finally hear from you…been following the story on INQ since the Dell days. Keep the mystique and don’t post any recent pictures.

Fare well where ever you may fare Everywhere Girl

#35 Roger on 07.06.06 at 6:09 pm

Hi! A clothes horse, you asked what one is. Well it’s a device in older times made of wood. They were made from vertical panels of horizontal wooden dowels, each panel hinged to the next using (usually) stout cloth. The purpose of these devices was to dry washing on indoors during bad weather. I suppose the nearest anology is to think of a series of very very wide step ladders made of wood.

#36 Stu on 07.06.06 at 6:16 pm

Congratulations on the Bog, Everywhere Girl. It’s great to learn the story behind your astonishingly beautiful and ubiquitous image. We all hope to hear more from you in the future.

#37 Grant on 07.06.06 at 6:19 pm

I hope the overuse of the stock photos has been helped by the lack of royalties, and this catapults your career in acting like you want.

BTW, you look a lot like an old friend of mine. Did you live in KC in the early 90’s?

#38 Patrick Gagnon on 07.06.06 at 6:45 pm

You have fans! Heck, you had fans long before you became famous. Wait… You’re not actually famous YET, are you? The Inq is a great place for all kinds of stuff and I’m so glad they reported on you.

As it was said above, don’t underestimate your fanbase…

You’re the cutest!

Patrick, of Montréal, Québec, Canada

#39 Rob Masters on 07.06.06 at 7:55 pm

Welcome to the strange and oddly compelling world of having your life on-line.

Like everyone who has followed your public appearances via the Inquirer, I am pleased to see that you have decided to talk a little about yourself.

Have fun, and don’t take any of us too seriously!

Warm greetings from Scotland! (yes we have internet now.. not just sheep).
Just to say I remember the very first articles about the mysterious E.G. appearing on the Inquirer and since then had always taken time to check out the latest “appearances” as updated by the site.
I’m sure all who are reading this blog agree that a little bit died in us when the saga finally ended with the announcement that you had finally been found!
Cudos on keeping the legend alive! :-D
Regards,
Muz.

#43 dstoff on 07.07.06 at 12:10 am

What kept you? Have you done any recent work? Thought I spotted you in a TV commercial dressed in a much different style. The Everywhere Girl would make a great concept for a movie or TV series. How about a mild mannered student/actress/model who shows up just in time anywhere and everywhere and no one knows quite how it’s done but it has something to do with The Inquirer. Blog on!

#44 S.Mo on 07.07.06 at 12:57 am

Hi,

Out of interest, apart from drama/acting, have you done any other arts or performing, e.g. singing and dance ?

My wife was an ex-pro dancer, did some modelling for BMW in europe, appeared on TV a few times, but never got into acting, even though she had contacts and met many famous people.

In UK performing arts colleges, most graduates may specialise in one art, but will usually have training in other faculties. It must be the same in the US, e.g. Christopher Walken in the Fatboy Slim vid Weapon of Choice.

Rgds,

Well, if you aren’t getting the fortune out of that photo shoot, at least you’re getting the fame. :)
Given how the photos from that shoot were used as iconic “college life” photos by so many advertisers, it sounds like you fit a lot of people’s image for that type of role. Not that I’m typecasting or anything.

#48 Sarah on 07.07.06 at 9:48 am

Kool!

It’s really great to see the person after all those mysterious pictures!

#49 silverpelicanfeather on 07.07.06 at 9:57 am

As the person who slanted the Inq in your direction (No, I have never mert you), I hope that all this turns out well for you and eventually, or sooner, you’ll make either money or professional enhancements from this.

Wish you all the best. And the Inq and Mike are pretty cool too.

#50 Oseary on 07.07.06 at 11:06 am

#52 Nick on 07.08.06 at 5:42 pm

Hurray! I’m glad to see you’re an actual person. I hope you’re able to leverage this into something other than the ubiquitous photo that we all see.

#53 Kieran on 07.09.06 at 5:56 am

Ah yes, the everywhere girl. Here in Guernsey (Channel Islands), all of my friends know who you are. There was so much mystery surrounding you as you well know. I guess it was a bonus having that photo shoot as well as it being used by so many big corporations on the front page of their websites. Congrats :)

#54 Bob on 07.09.06 at 12:20 pm

Does it bother you that http://www.everywheregirl.com/ is the sleaziest kind of porno site and a lot of people looking for you will end in that scum bucket instead?

#55 theH on 07.11.06 at 7:49 am

I’m very sorry for what this people did to you, I guess it is in human nature to destroy all of that which we can’t reach or appreciate, frustrated people, frustrated lives, there are no other words for this guys, other than morons, retards,

Can’t they just get a life?

Nevertheless, you look like a very sensitive and humble person, you will certainly enjoy your life and achieve great success, if you enjoy what you do, then you are already a success to me, I’m a programmer, but I always wanted to be a doctor, I guess some people follow their dreams, others miss it, others can’t handle others having it,

Good luck and have a happy life!

#56 Cristobal on 07.12.06 at 5:33 am

I was just going through some random Wikipedia articles, and I saw you under the “mysterious people” category. That was about an hour ago, and now I’ve been immersed in this phenomenon (as you call it). I’ve been going around to all the sites about you, looking at the pictures (and it’s 5:30 in the morning where I am!).

So I was wondering when this “infamous photoshoot” was done. What year was it?? I seem to remember this exact picture from either the late 1990s or the early 2000s…

http://delivery.gettyimages.com/xc/ED000692.jpg?v=1&c=CFW&k=2&d=8FC92B371A376FA0C0407D725CDCD18D

(I’m wondering if you’ll ever respond, because you have so many e-mails!)

#57 Cristobal on 07.15.06 at 1:11 am

Ok ignore my last comment, haha (the comment directly above), I found the answer to my question myself. So, wow, the photo shoot was 10 years ago? I KNEW I saw that picture (the one I posted above) in the late 1990s. I saw on it on some book that had something to do with teaching or studying (this was a long time ago and I only saw it for 3 seconds, so I’m quite surprised I remember it).

By the way, I heard your voice (on the podcast) and it reminded me of a teacher I had last year, and she happened to be from Oregon too (maybe I’m just telling myself that she sounds like you, because you’re both from Oregon). Is there such a thing as an Oregon accent? (I live in California so I probably wouldn’t know the difference!).

P.S. The link above wasn’t working for me, so if you couldn’t see the picture, here it is again: http://i1.tinypic.com/2002n8y.jpg

Of course, it is possible for an image to become too popular. A few years ago, a model/actress living in Portland did a one-day photo shoot on the campus of Reed College. She frolicked around the grounds and inside a classroom, wearing a purplish hat she’d borrowed from the wardrobe coordinator. The photos taken that day have subsequently appeared in ads for both Gateway and Dell; on the Web sites for a Canadian media planning company, a British science museum, the BBC, Microsoft Finland, Greyhound bus lines, etc.; and on the covers of countless books. Infamous is not the right word for this blog’s title. Check it out here:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/infamous

Probably who created this blog saw “The Three Amigos” movie. When the characters used the word “infamous” meaning: very famous…they were kidding, because they are supposed to be stupid. Check out the dictionary, please.

#73 The Everywhere Girl on 10.20.09 at 2:53 pm

Wow, someone is grumpy pants. Sorry I offended you with my stupidity…although considering I attend UC Berkeley, but am NOT an English major, I’m not going to worry about it. ;)

#74 Teh Pwnzer on 10.20.09 at 3:25 pm

Perhaps Maurice is correct in his/her critique of the title (although I sense no hostility on his/her part). Yet I find it inexcusable to cite the works of director John Landis using quotation marks. Certainly you must be joking? May we please use italics (the correct format for citing film titles)?

#75 The Everywhere Girl on 10.22.09 at 11:25 am

I realize now that I have used the word “infamous” incorrectly, but considering the fact that this post is over 3 years old, I am just not going to worry about changing it now. And I am also not going to worry about whether something should be in italics or quotations…life is too short for me to worry about stuff like that.

But thank you both for your knowledge of the English language…my English-majoring family appreciates it! Me, I am a Psych major, so I’ll just analyze you both…haha!

Have a good day! ;)
