chalk-a-phobia

Well I searched high and low for the official name of the phobia I have, but I could not find one. So I am going to keep it simple with the term chalk-a-phobia. It’s not exactly a phobia in that I am not actually frightened of chalk, I don’t go running screaming from the room when I see it, but I *hate* the feeling of it on my hands…*shudders*. I also feel this way about chalkboards, cotton balls and the like, and a little bit about styrofoam…very much like Cinnamongirl in the second post here. They are all just dry and make weird sounds or their textures are creepy…yikes!

It’s a little bit of a problem since some of the classrooms at my school have not gotten the new dry erase boards yet and still have old chalkboards and often we are requested to go up to the board for stuff…I am always an active participant in my classes so my teachers think it is odd when I don’t want to go up to the board…so i have to explain my weird phobia and sound like a freak.  In one of my classes they let me use one of those chalk holders which was better, but like nails on the chalkboard I also hate the sound if the chalk squeaks on it…and the feeling of the erasers or if my hand brushes against the chalkboard…..uugghh. I must stop now or I will have the heeby jeebies all night.

Hey, I have chalk-a-phobia too, does yours include baking parchment, thats the worst for me (the grease paper stuff you use to bake cakes on)

#2 The Everywhere Girl on 11.19.07 at 10:53 am

hhmmm, no it doesn’t…but now it will! That’s how my cotton one started…a friend told me all about how it gives her the willies, and next thing you know I hated it!

Cotton phobia (usually cotton balls) seems to be somewhat common: Bambakophobia. There are myspace pages and even youtube videos about it.

I have a really weird phobia of dust, I can’t go into old rooms, and stuff… does anyone else have a phobia of dust ??

Same here, actually. It’s gotten so bad, I can’t touch so many things, like chalk, the siding of a house, mailboxes(mine, anyway) chalkboards, cotton balls, pencils, sand, mud(it dries on your hand) and i cant let the air touch my hands, so I have to keep them in a fist or else they’ll get all dry and EUGHHH. God, I just want this to stop.

I have chalk a phobia too. My little girl has a tub full of chalk sticks and i cant bring myself to touch them to pack them away – the thought of touching chalk makes my skin crawl and i get a gagging feeling in the back of my throat and a shudder

i hate it!

i think what we all have is xerophobia, the fear of dryness, or dry things
stock up on the vaseline!

#9 The Everywhere Girl on 10.14.08 at 12:09 am

ugh Shelby I think you are right…just thinking about the dryness gave me the willies!

#10 angie on 10.21.08 at 1:40 pm

I didnt think there was anyone else out there with the chalk thing. I cant stand touching walls either. I dont share the cotton balll thing but chalk or somone running thier nails down a wall will send me in tears , shaking, sweating. a friend stuck a piece of chalk in my cig case once I flipped out

#11 Victoria on 10.24.08 at 10:24 am

I absolutely hate the way chalk feels on my hands. I cringe when I see people writing on chalkboards, even if its on a movie. I also get the same feeling about cotton balls and tissues (like Kleenex) Just writing about it gives me goosebumps. Does anyone know what this phobia is called?

#12 kasey on 10.30.08 at 12:53 pm

you are a kindred spirit. i actually found this because i’m currently harnessing the limitless power of google to hunt down the name of this fear. Because I just got out of class and the teacher asked me to come and write on the board, and i tried…but i couldn’t and in the end i just had to ask to be excused! muchly embarrassing…

I also have a similar fear of peach fuzz. anyone else have that?

#13 Christian on 11.21.08 at 2:38 pm

I get goosebumps all over me, and my palms get sweaty if I think about touching chalk for too long. I couldn’t stand the exposed part of the wood on pencils felt when I was a kid either. Teachers were always pissed at me because I wrote in pen. Chalk though, makes my butthole pucker.

#14 Sarah on 12.11.08 at 11:09 am

i was just looking up the fear . I have to wear gloves when i touch dusty objects or anything that might make my hands feel dry. If it touchs me i have wash my hands to try to get the feeling to go away. All my friends make fun of me for it they think i’m weird. so i try to keep it contained but sometimes i just freak out. I start to shake and cry if i can’t get the feeling to go away. I have very sensitive skin and my palms are so ticklish i think that has something to do with it. I’m glad that i am not alone. does anyone know the best way to make that feeling go away?

I cant touch mashmellows with that white powder on them and cornflour gives me the hebe jebes, ive been trying to find a name for the mashmello phobia but have had no luck :( just the thought of it gross’s me out.

#16 Lynn on 01.01.09 at 12:13 pm

I get goosebumps or cringe whenever I have mud dry on my hands, touch walls painted with flat paint, have a tongue depressor put on my tongue, a napkin or cloth touches my tongue. The same result happen just thinking about those things! I have had people say it is weird, but I see I am not alone!

#17 Megan on 01.12.09 at 5:03 pm

oh my goodness! i am soooooo glad i’m not the only one with this problem! i’m so afraid of chalk i can’t even be in the same room with anything that even reminds me of it! certain textures of pavement bother me a lot, as well as types of candies like sweet tarts and smarties. all my friends think i’m like crazy or something, so im super excited that i’m not alone here!

#18 sarah holmes on 03.07.09 at 2:46 pm

OMG!!!! i am so glad there are others like me out there ! my chalk phobia started when i was only a foetus, only it has gotten much worse since i have been born!!!! i couldnt stand my mother using talcum powder on my ass when i was a baby cos it reminded me of chalk so much!! this has gotten so bad i wrap myself in cotton wool ( sorry cotton wool haters!) to save me from this maddess… does anyone have a cure?????

my ass hole is like a nun’s cunt when i think of chalk

#19 Loraine on 03.28.09 at 6:04 pm

it’s nice to know i’m not the only weirdo, people just don’t understand this fear of mine!!!!! they think i’m being a “drama Queen” or doing it to make a fuss of myself, it’s nice to see others cringe and gag while touching this harmless object too. Thank you fellow chalk haters!

#20 yolanda on 04.05.09 at 9:20 pm

reading yor comments made me cringe,
i hate touching cardboard as well its the worst!! the feeling on my hands. i always try n keep my hands moisterised but it dosnt seem 2 help much. actually touchin anythin wen my hands feel a lil dry it pretty hard 2 do. i get goosebumps jus thinkin bout it. WILL IT EVA STOP! shoot me.

#21 Monica on 05.02.09 at 8:21 pm

Hey guys!! I’m so glad that I am also not alone with this.. I’m currently a college student and one of my professors seemed to be really irritated when I didn’t want to write on the board because of my complex with chalk. My professor sent me a really rude email that said “If you really have a chalk phobia you’ll need to overcome it sooner or later to be a success in anything.”
Clearly, there are others, such as yourselves, who have this issue and I’m sure you all are doing just fine in life. SO unless you all are failing bums, my professor is not a very nice person.

#22 Nads on 05.19.09 at 3:46 pm

I can’t stand writing on chalkboards, touching cardboard, or rubber toys. Really stinks when I have to open up boxes and stock dog toys where I work. :P

#23 Beth on 06.11.09 at 9:17 am

I used to be fine with chalk, until recently! Now if I think about it for too long I get goose bumps everywhere. I can’t reach into a tin of Altoids, eat Oreo cookies or walk across a dusty cement floor without convulsing.

I’m gonna have to rule out the Xerophobia (at least for me). I also have extremely high frequency hearing, and I think the sound is a big component.

So wierd! Good thing white boards are replacing chalkboards.

#24 Maddie on 07.09.09 at 3:13 pm

I also have a Chalk-a-phobia it makes my skin crawl to even write the word… does dry printer paper bother you too? It has a very strange texture to me I cant stand it even when im unloading the dishwasher and random things like that make me feel the need to wash my hands to get the powdery feel off… eww even the thought of it makes me want to cry or makes my skin crawl i know it sounds dramatic but its true …

#25 Maddie on 07.09.09 at 3:15 pm

eww also walking a cross my garage gives me the creeps so many things
i hate chalk

#26 Beth on 07.24.09 at 12:31 pm

I recently went on Prozac for anxiety and the chalk problem has been much better! It’s still there a little bit but not nearly as bad. I thought you’d all be interested to know.

#27 Nephalem on 08.25.09 at 8:00 am

I have had this exact problem my whole life. Cardboard, pencils, chalk, slate, and dirty metal were always the worst for me, but all in all it was just a minor annoyance. I found this page tho because my wife forced me to google the problem as it has in the last week gotten much, much worse. It’s to the point now that I can’t even touch the steering wheel of my car without cringing, my feet on the carpet as I walk around the house drive me crazy and the filter paper of my cigarettes bothers me so much I’ve taken up smoking without using my hands like an old western movie cliché.

#28 Ashley on 09.10.09 at 11:39 pm

I don’t like chalk either! And I am a teacher in an old school and have to use it every day, so go figure. By the end of the day my pants are always covered with it from me wiping my hands on them. :)

#29 Ben on 10.22.09 at 12:24 pm

I hate chalk. I can’t touch it, it makes me feel really sick. I also can’t touch flour for the same reason, or I have to immediately wash my hands.

#30 brock on 10.23.09 at 8:02 pm

i have the worst time with pencils. honestly im just clinching my teeth at the thought of taking my ACT test tomorrow because i have to use a real pencil. i havent use a real pencil in over 10 years just because of how much it bothers me. idk if its the led or what but as soon as it touches anything i want to freak out. im wondering if its a texture thing. a lot of the things ive read on here are the same with me. maybe dryness. if someone knows what to call it let me know.

#31 Ralphie fan on 12.29.09 at 12:16 pm

How about powdered sugar? Eating a date with powdered sugar sent me looking for others with this odd reaction. For me it’s chaulk and powdered sugar.

Btw I don’t need to hear about peoples nether regions much less those of a nun. Have people lost all sense of like propriety? While we’re At it, what is the word for people who take pride in being crude?

#32 MsWilliams on 01.14.10 at 8:05 am

I hate touch most of paper products, I hate writting with pencils, crayons and marker, I even hate for people next to me to also the sound and the feeling send chills down my back.

#33 Sara on 02.25.10 at 10:44 pm

I’m not afraid of chalk- but I am deathly afraid of chalkboard erasers. Everything about them drives me nuts. I get the shivers, and my neck prickles. Ughhh. I just… dont even. It’s so silly but I cannot even watch them erase.

#34 katie on 03.16.10 at 1:56 pm

i have chalk-a-phobia to with chalk and chalk boards but for some reason i dont wind chalk if it wet. i guess it is because i dont like the dusty feeling. im the one who will run out of a room because my brother tries to touch me with it.

Teachers Instill Chalk o Phobia, just to make Student Uncomoftable. Perhaps Idea of University Brought Back Old Feelings from Uncomofrtable fact that have to sit thru Screaming Chalk, ALL day.

Colored Chalk Is pretty. RED Esapecially nice.

Like Blood Phobias, Get Over It, Once Good at IT. Or Growing OLD, Nothing to brag about, yet should of Listened to Heart & stayed Young.

EAT CHALK: Don’t Skreeche Chalk.
