From The Everywhere Girl Diaries – a work of fiction
Third week of June, year one
Dear Diary,
Well, several parents complained and the school is going to send out a list with the names of all of the graduating seniors along with what they really plan to do next year. It will also be printed in the local paper. I’ve heard that some parents have asked if their son or daughter can just keep the plan they were given at graduation, but that may just be a rumor. Anyway, the school has also decided that next year they’ll only read the names and nothing more. They said that what a person plans to do after they graduate is no one else’s business. I thought they might have overreacted, but then again I suppose, given the uproar and use of phrases like “out of town on a rail” in the editorial in the paper, you can’t blame them.
In the meantime I have a bigger problem. I was supposed to start my summer job this week. I would like to emphasize the word summer as no one could be expected to do this kind of work for any length of time. I should also emphasize supposed to as the Health Department apparently had other ideas. On Monday, our one and only gyro shop was closed indefinitely. With that, my chances for summer employment decreased by approximately 100%. Everyone has already done all their summer hiring, not to mention the fact that we are now in competition with the ever-growing number of unemployed adults who currently make up about 15% of our town’s population.
I wasn’t expecting to make a lot of money, but I was hoping to be able to buy a year’s supply of contacts. It was going to be a Father’s Day gift for my Dad. He thinks that contacts are frivolous and a huge waste of money. He tells me that glasses make me look smarter. He just doesn’t get that “smarter” is not the look I’m going for. The way he talks, you would think that paying for your daughter’s contacts was akin to buying her a diamond tiara.
Luckily I’ve received some unexpected checks for graduation. Who knew that not being truant for 12 years would come with financial rewards? I’m sure I have enough to place an order with Campus Contacts. Getting a Blackberry will have to wait.
