From The Everywhere Girl Diaries – a work of fiction
Third week of January, year one
Dear Diary,
Well, here I am in another time zone. Aunt Beth put me on a plane yesterday and I flew to Mexico City. It’s really wonderful to see my family, but I’m really tired. During the flight, I was reading an article about the importance of sleep. Unfortunately the magazine was in Spanish, so I could only understand about every fourth word. I was, however, able to determine that sleep is important. It’s going to be one of my priorities when I get back to school.
Mr. Mallard and I have been exchanging emails like crazy. He’s been having me do a lot of work, although none of it relates to the Spectrum investigation. His business is really taking off. He’s getting a lot of new clients, mostly through referrals. Most of the stuff is pretty mundane – not as exciting as you might imagine. We’ve done everything from finding a lost dog to tracking down the owner of a diary someone found in the attic of the new house they had just bought.
I know he’s still bummed about the police not wanting or asking for his help. Sure, they’re paying him to keep his eyes and ears open, but he’s not being invited to any of the “meetings” like some of the other PIs in town. It really isn’t fair.
